Nestled along the North Platte River, the Douglas population of approximately 5,000 has easy, in-town access to fishing, canoeing and rafting. Due to Douglas’ location, residents can enjoy nearby abundant summer and winter sports, including downhill and cross-country snow skiing, snowmobiling, water skiing, boating, camping, hiking, rock climbing, fishing and hunting. Public lands within driving distance include national forests, state and national parks, wilderness areas, big game refuges, and national recreation areas.
Douglas offers great railroad and interstate highway transportation options and easy, direct access to commercial airports. Douglas is linked to major cities by I-25 and is served by Converse County Airport. Douglas is located 130 miles north of Cheyenne, Wyoming’s Capital and 50 miles east of Casper, Wyoming.
The major industries include ranching, coal mining, agriculture, natural gas, and railroad. The needs of the community are well-served with a 25-bed hospital, approximately 20 restaurants, 4 clothing stores, 2 grocery stores, 7 gas stations, 3 convenience stores, a public library, an 18-hole golf course, 20 hotel/motels, a campground and a variety of specialty shops.
Douglas is in Norman Crampton’s book, “The 100 Best Small Towns in America” because of its small population, location, viable economic base, population diversity, high education level, good schools, readily available health care and low crime rate. Douglas offers much for business. Douglas has fiber optic capacity and cable modem access to the Internet. Douglas is also blessed with a progressive city government, thoroughly engaged youth programs and an education system focused on workforce development.
The town of Douglas has a well educated, hard-working, yet friendly workforce. The unemployment rate in Converse County was 4.8 percent in 2003. Douglas is home to a two-year community college, Eastern Wyoming College, and hosts various outreach classes through Casper College and the University of Wyoming.
Memorial Hospital of Converse County provides a comprehensive array of services to the area covering Converse County and much of eastern and central Wyoming. In addition to family health care and general surgical care, specialty practices based at MHCC include colon/rectal surgery, orthopedic surgery and obstetric and gynecological care.
Converse County has a rich history. The legacy is rooted in mountain men, the Oregon Trail pioneers, railroads and, of course, the wild western frontier. That heritage is alive and thriving today. Many of the historic sites and buildings are still wonderfully preserved. That pioneering spirit, essential to survive in the old west, still exists. Across the wide open spaces, the people of Converse County have a deep commitment to protecting the environment and a love of the outdoors. Medicine Bow National Forest provides camping, fishing, hiking, backpacking and wildlife viewing. Each August, Douglas is home to the Wyoming State Fair. In addition, Douglas offers many cultural experiences at the Pioneer Museum and the Fort Fetterman State Historic Site, near Douglas.
