Kemmerer, Wyoming is a small town with a population of 103 Pronghorn Antelope, 113,000 Fossil Fish and 3,000 people in southwest Wyoming. Located six miles south of Kemmerer is the world's largest open pit coal mine. Kemmerer is also the home to one of the world’s largest retail outlets. James Cash “JC” Penney founded his chain upon moving to Kemmerer in 1902 to open a dry goods store for the booming mining town. The original J.C. Penney store is still a thriving retail outlet in this small prairie town. Kemmerer has one industrial park just west of town and rail service is available. With plenty of space available to expand or relocate, Kemmerer is an ideal community for businesses.
Kemmerer is known for its pleasantly cool summer days with the temperatures seldom reaching 90 degrees and little humidity. Fall brings the changing of the seasons; the nights and mornings are crisp and days filled with sunshine. Wintertime brings snow and cold temperatures, but the sun continues to shine throughout the season, bringing a unique beauty to the valley. Spring rains herald the completion of the cycle of life for the flowers and wildlife. In addition to the great weather, Kemmerer has no pollution, no traffic, no crowds and no stress.
Western Wyoming Community College offers an outreach program in Kemmerer with focuses on Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees. The outreach program serves both full time and part time students in the credit program and can assist these students with financial aid, scholarships and academic advising. WWCC has veterans and senior citizens waivers as well as Pell grants and Stafford loans. The outreach program offers community non-credit classes and provides services with on site classes, compressed video, and audio-bridge, and video taped classes.
Hunting and fishing opportunities abound along with splendid opportunities to see and interact with wildlife. Downhill skiing, snowshoeing, cutter racing, dog sledding, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are all within a short drive from Kemmerer. Summers offer white water rafting, hiking, biking, and camping. With moose that hang out at the golf course, and deer that feast on lawn grass and rose bushes, any time of the year is perfect for wildlife viewing.
The areas surrounding Kemmerer have strong ties to prehistoric Wyoming. Fossil Butte National Monument is an 8,198 acre natural area that was established in 1972. The dominant feature is a 1,000 foot tall escarpment rising above the plains. Within this butte are millions of fossil fish, insects, snails, turtles and plants. The Fossil Butte Visitor Center houses a variety of displays on the area's geology, paleontology and natural history. The Fossil County Frontier Museum located in downtown Kemmerer contains a variety of art, mining and archeological exhibits. The museum staff offers a wide variety of cultural programs throughout the year.
