Nestled in a valley, at just 3,745 feet above sea level (the lowest major city in Wyoming), Sheridan is bordered on the west by the dramatic Big Horn Mountains and Bighorn National Forest, a mere 15 miles away, with a great expanse to the east of Wyoming high plains. Conveniently located adjacent to Interstate 90, the City of Sheridan is also 30 miles from the junction of Interstates 90 and 25. Sheridan is 125 miles southeast of Billings, Montana; 240 miles west of Rapid City, South Dakota; and 440 miles north of Denver, Colorado. With a thriving entrepreneurial spirit, exceptional communication connectivity, the addition of business-ready building sites, and business friendly tax environment, Sheridan is poised to diversify its growing economy. Approximately 27 percent of Sheridan’s workforce is entrepreneurial.
Sheridan's workforce is stable, with an average age (40) slightly higher than the national average age of 36. Approximately 22 percent of Sheridan’s workforce has obtained at least a bachelor's degree or higher and 88 percent of the workforce has a high school diploma or higher. Many of these workers are underemployed. Sheridan County's unemployment at the end of the third quarter of 2004 was 2.5 percent, being the sixth lowest in the state (state average of 3.3 percent). The growing local community college (Sheridan College) partners with local employers to develop programs to meet educational needs that foster development and expansion.
Sheridan is home to a community college with an enrollment of approximately 1,500 students. Sheridan College consists of modern well-equipped facilities and attractive grounds. Currently, twenty campus buildings house academic classrooms, student services and residential facilities. In addition to providing general core classes for accreditation toward four-year programs, Sheridan College also offers AAS degree/certificate programs in many areas.
A number of local developers are in the process of building commercial properties in the City of Sheridan and a business park has been approved adjacent to the airport. Sheridan County Airport serves as a regional airport for Sheridan and Johnson counties.
Sheridan has an up-to-date 84-bed county hospital with over 50 practicing physicians and an Emergency Room. Other types of medical services include physical rehab and mental rehab services, which are not available in many towns much larger than Sheridan.
Sheridan’s activities include hunting, fishing, water sports, snow sports, ice skating/hockey, hiking, climbing, caving, camping, hang gliding, horseback riding, wildlife photography, live theater & other productions and art shows & art festivals. From great golf in the summer to some of the best snow machining trails in the country, from a rich Western history to renowned art communities, Sheridan has everything—all in a valley nestled at the base of the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming.
