Serving as the county seat for Crook County, Sundance, Wyoming provides a supportive economic climate and a community that offers unmatched beauty and recreation. Located in the northeast corner of Wyoming along I-90, Sundance is situated along the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountain range in the heart of the Wyoming Black Hills. Local terrain varies from tall grass prairie to ponderosa pine covered mountains.
The largest employment sectors are government, agriculture, manufacturing, retail trade and services. The principal economic activities in the county are ranching, forest products, oil production and tourism. Other industries include automotive dealers and service stations, eating and drinking establishments, retail, lodging and recreation services. The city’s industrial park has 25 acres and is zoned industrial.
Commercial service is available at the Gillette Airport, 63 miles from Sundance, having several daily departures with connections to Denver, CO. Charter flights are available at the airport. Commercial air service is also available through Rapid City, SD, 76 miles from Sundance.
College and adult education courses for students seeking higher education foundation and vocational training are offered through Eastern Wyoming College Sundance.
Sundance has a hospital with 16 beds and a 32-room nursing home. The hospital offers: emergency, laboratory, physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, radiology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, home healthcare, hospice, and more.
Nearby attractions include: Bearlodge Mountains - Black Hills National Forest; Inyan Kara Mountain - National Forest/wilderness area; Keyhole State Park; Devils Tower National Monument; Spearfish Canyon; Thunder Basin National Grassland; Crazy Horse Memorial; Custer State Park; and Mount Rushmore. Activities include hiking around Devils Tower, playing golf, flyfishing, waterskiing at Keyhole Reservoir or playing in the snow high up in the Bearlodge Mountains. The area around Sundance has nearly 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Hunting for elk, deer, antelope, turkey and more as wildlife abound. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and the South Dakota Black Hills are within an easy day trip.
America's first National Monument, Devils Tower, has many paved trails and some of the most popular crack climbs in the world. Devils Tower is just 27 miles from Sundance.
Sand Creek, just 17 miles east of Sundance, provides premier fishing opportunities for rainbow and brown trout while walleye, northern pike, bass and crappie abound just 15 miles to the west of Sundance in Keyhole Reservoir. Cook Lake, just to the north of Sundance offers a serene setting with excellent trout fishing for all ages.
The Bearlodge Ranger District of the Black Hills National Forest boasts miles and miles of trails with breathtaking views for the hiker, mountain biker or horseback rider.
Devils Tower Golf, just 7 miles from Devils Tower offers a premiere front nine designed by Richard Phelps in the footprint of the Tower with breathtaking views in all directions. The Pine Haven Country Club offers a beautiful 9-hole course overlooking beautiful Keyhole Reservoir just 23 miles west of Sundance.
