Pinedale, Wyoming is located in western Wyoming approximately 78 miles south of Jackson Hole and 100 miles north of Rock Springs along Highway 191. The town is nestled on the western flank of the Wind River Mountain Range. Pinedale is a small community of about 1,500 people with a western flavor. The surrounding mountains tower to more than 13,000 feet.
While historically ranching has been the mainstay industry, many local businesses are now service related to accommodate the varied recreational opportunities in the surrounding Wind River Mountains, Bridger Wilderness and Bridger-Teton National Forest.
Major industries are oil & gas, ranching, tourism, recreation and government. The Jonah Field is a natural gas field approximately 30 miles south of Pinedale. Formed about 65 million years ago, this natural gas field is considered world class for the significant amount of natural gas (10.5 trillion cubic feet-TCF) estimated to be trapped in a very small surface footprint. Currently, the Jonah Field productive area is only about 21,000 acres, just under one township in size.
Current restrictions for drilling will allow only about 35 percent of the natural gas trapped in Jonah Field formations to be produced. This prevents production of up to 4.5 TCF, enough to serve all of Wyoming households for 468 years. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently engaged in a process (an Environmental Impact Statement or E.I.S.) that may allow up to 78 percent of the gas reserves to be produced and sent to market.
The closest commercial airports are in Jackson (78 miles), Rock Springs (100 miles) and Salt Lake City (250 miles).
Local general aviation airport is Pinedale Wenz Field located approximately 6 miles south of Pinedale next to US Hwy 191. This field is suitable for larger corporate jets.
Pinedale is serviced by a 24-hour clinic. The nearest hospital is in Jackson, 77 miles away. Emergency Life Flight helicopter service is available.
Camping, 4-wheeling, mountain biking, horseback riding, water sports, more than 1,300 lakes and miles of mountain hiking trails, and more make the area an outdoor enthusiast's delight. Pinedale is located on the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail, so snowmobiling and x-country skiing are very popular sports in the winter. White Pine Ski Area, a family-oriented downhill ski resort, is just 10 miles away from Pinedale in the nearby Bridger-Teton National Forest. Pinedale has spectacular scenery, wildlife, fishing, horseback riding, photography, and many more adventure opportunities.
Wyoming's highest mountain, Gannett Peak (13,804'), along with six of the largest seven glaciers in the contiguous states, is located in the Wind River Range. Other local attractions include Rendezvous Meadows Golf Course-18 hole designed 9 hole course; Cirque of the Towers-Hard rock technical climber's Mecca and spectacular scenery; Bridger-Teton National Forest; and Green River headwaters and Green River Lakes.
