Torrington is conveniently located north of the "Front Range," which includes Colorado Springs, Denver, Fort Collins and Cheyenne. It is located in Southeast Wyoming near the Nebraska Panhandle along the massive North Platte River. This location is ideal for manufactures looking for a cost-effective location to serve the Rocky Mountain Area and the Midwest. The city is just 75 minutes North of Cheyenne, WY where various distribution centers such as Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and Sierra Trading Post are located.
The small community of around 6,000 people, has a little of everything. Torrington has all the necessities of life including doctors, dentists and a 35-bed hospital. The city boasts one of the lowest costs of living in the state and has also been named the cleanest city in Wyoming. Torrington has an industrial park of over 100 acres with utilities hooked-up. Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railways and State Highways 85 and 26 also serve Torrington.
The principal industry for Goshen County is agriculture. Sugar beets, potatoes, beans, corn, wheat and other grains, and alfalfa are all grown in the area. More than 20,000 cattle are raised and marketed in Goshen County, which makes it the leading beef producer in the state. Along with agriculture, Torrington also has industry including a sugar plant where the locally grown sugar beets are processed and an ethanol plant processes locally grown corn just south of town.
In addition, Torrington has the largest cattle auction yard in the state and has several Holstein raisers in the county. The weather conditions in Goshen County are a major advantage to the dairy industry. The average daily temperature ranges from about 25 degrees Fahrenheit to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and the city has 317 sunny days a year, which contributes to maximum livestock productivity. This is within the comfort zone for both livestock and laborers. The area also has less humidity and rainfall than most areas, which drastically reduces mold and mildew problems for the dairy industry. Average humidity is about 40 percent. Such temperate weather conditions attract livestock operations that are compatible with feed supply and market conditions. Feed conversion and milk productivity are extremely enhanced in these weather conditions.
