A landscape of grasslands blends into mountains in the Southeast Region counties of Carbon, Albany, Laramie and Goshen. Situated as the north anchor of the Rocky Mountain Front Range, the varied terrain of the area includes plains, Snowy and Laramie Mountain Ranges, Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and the eastern border of the Red Desert. The region is a transportation crossroads with two interstates and excellent rail service.

The Southeast is the most populated region in the state with 144,886 residents. The median age is 35.5 and the percentage of residents whose education is above high school is 61.7. The household income ranges from $30,535 in Albany County to $42,590 in Laramie County. The household value ranges from $69,934 in Carbon County to $110,550 in Albany County.

State and federal government are major employers in Laramie, Albany and Carbon Counties with the state capitol, the University of Wyoming and the State Penitentiary residing in this region. The area fosters the industries of manufacturing, communications and high tech. Agriculture dominates Goshen County, which leads the state in cattle and corn production, and eastern Laramie County, which is the leader in winter wheat production. Situated at the junction of two interstates, Cheyenne is becoming a major distribution hub. Colleges in the region include the University of Wyoming in Laramie and community colleges in Cheyenne, Laramie and Torrington.

Business and industrial parks are located in every county in the region. Nearly every community, large and small, has high-speed connectivity. Laramie and Cheyenne offer commercial air service; and Rawlins, Saratoga, Pine Bluffs and Torrington offer public airports. Interstate 80, the major east-west route, passes through Laramie, Albany and Carbon Counties and Interstate 25 passes through Laramie County. Cheyenne is less than a hundred miles from Denver.

The region’s communities offer greenways, symphony/theatre, golf courses, indoor recreational facilities and college sports. The outdoor recreation includes mountain climbing, wildlife viewing and hiking, while large reservoirs in Carbon County provide water activities.
