West Central Region

The peaks of the Wind River Mountains divide the West Central Region, which includes Fremont and Teton Counties. The Wind River Indian Reservation encompasses a large part of Fremont County. Grand Teton National Park lies in Teton County as does the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

The West Central Region has a population of 61,159. The median age is 38.6 and 59.7 percent of people have education beyond high school. The median household income ranges from $34,829 in Fremont County to $58,908 in Teton County. The average household value is $85,838 in Fremont County compared to $337,368 in Teton County.

Surrounded by national parks and national forests, tourism dominates the region. The region’s major employers are tourism and its related industries, natural resource extraction and the region is becoming a manufacturing hub for the state. Sublette County ranks second in gas production in the state. Fremont County boasts 140,000 irrigate acres and is a HUB Zone. Central Wyoming College provides the area with training facilities.

Business parks are located in almost every community. Riverton and Jackson offer commercial air service with direct flights to Salt Lake City and Denver. Dubois and Lander have public airports. Major US Highways 26, 287, 189 and 191 are the lifelines of the West Central communities. Fremont County is served by north/south rail service.

From the grandeur of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks to the peaks of the Wind River Mountains, the region’s beauty is unparalleled. The cities and towns offer activities ranging from symphonies, to golf courses and community recreational facilities. The Boysen Reservoir is a popular destination for motorboat enthusiasts, water skiers and fishermen. Hiking, wildlife watching, skiing and climbing are among the recreational opportunities that lie in this region.
